Learning disability

Avenues specialises in supporting peeople with profound and multiple learning disability (PMLD), often combined with autism and behaviour that challenges. Sometimes people have mental health conditions too.

We take pride in supporting people to enjoy happy, healthy and connected lives in the community, and in the peace of mind our support gives people’s families.

Often we start supporting adults because they are moving on from a residential or hospital placement into supported living, or because the previous placement has broken down. It isn’t uncommon for us to be contacted when someone has reached a crisis point with their current support arrangement, and we’re experienced in working with commissioners and families to develop new support packages that really work for people with learning disability.

Parents of affected children and young people may be looking for additional support to bring a new dimension to their child’s life, or family life in general. Young people may be transitioning into adulthood and need support to become more independent as they leave the family home or residential education. And we’re experienced is supporting people through old age, as their health and support needs change.

All our services are built on the foundation of Active Support and Positive Behaviour Support principles, and we support children and young people, adults with learning disabilities throughout life with our outreach, supported living and residential services.

We have been supporting people with these conditions to enjoy good lives in the community since the closure of the long-stay hospitals, more than 25 years ago.
