NHS Long Term Plan - "an integrated strategic response involving health and social care is required", Avenues responds.

This statement is a response to the recent publication of the NHS Long Term Plan and in particular the plans for people with learning disabilities and autism.

“The NHS long term plan contains some welcome commitments, the expansion of STOMP an extension of personal health budgets and good things. But the plan misses a great opportunity. Children, young people and adults with a learning disability and/or autism with the most complex needs, need an indicated approach involving health and crucially social care.

The plan outlines increasing investment in community crisis services and mentions learning disability improvement standards but relates them to health services. Until there is an understanding at a national level that an integrated strategic response involving health and social care is required people will continue to languish in secure settings in the absence of sustainable community alternatives.”
