Restraint of people with learning disability – Avenues response
Tuesday 2nd of October 2018This statement is our response to the news that the use of restraint on adults with learning disabilities in hospital units in England rose by 50% between 2016 and 2017*.
“The real issue here is that mental health units are wholly inappropriate environments for people with learning disability, and the Government knows this. Learning disability is not a mental health issue and these people’s needs cannot be met in these units.
“The additional use of prone restraint against them is archaic, unnecessary and dangerous. We support hundreds of people with these types of needs to live in the community, without the use of prone restraint, and we are not alone.
“It’s time for the NHS to listen to specialist learning disability providers and start doing the right thing for these people.”
