Record-breaking CQC ‘hat-trick’ for Avenues

Monday 21st of November 2022

Avenues has become the first ever Supported Living provider to achieve an Outstanding CQC rating three times in a row.

Only 5 per cent of adult social care providers in the country are assessed to be Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Avenues is the first supported living provider in England to achieve this highest rating for a third time running and across all five areas of inspection.

In the South East, Avenues supports people with learning disabilities, autism and complex needs in Tonbridge, Margate, Tunbridge Wells, Rainham, Ramsgate, Aylesham, Birchington-on-Sea, Eastry, Gillingham, Hildenborough, West Malling and West Kingsdown.

Avenues South East Supported Living service was judged by CQC to be Outstanding in all five aspects inspected, being ‘exceptionally safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led’. CQC’s report stated that “People received exceptional care from staff who were dedicated, well trained and passionate about achieving excellent outcomes for people.” The report highlights how staff use innovative and imaginative ways to promote people’s independence.

CQC also gave examples of how “risks in relation to people’s support were exceptionally well managed to allow people to live their lives freely as they chose, sometimes for the first time in their lives.”

It also praised how staff work with other agencies to provide consistent, effective, timely care. For instance, helping people with learning disabilities overcome their fear of needles through a gradual desensitisation programme, enabling them to receive the coronavirus vaccine.

Jo Land, Avenues Chief Executive said, “I am very, very proud.  Despite the challenges of Covid-19 and social care funding pressures, our staff have shown exceptional skill and dedication. Every day they make sure that the people who we support have the best opportunities and the best lives we can help them to achieve. It is really wonderful to have this recognised by our independent regulators.”

Kevin Hulls, Avenues South East Regional Director said, “I am thrilled with this landmark achievement. To be rated as Outstanding by CQC three times in row, across all five domains, tells us how incredible our team is. Through working together with the people we support and their loved ones, we focus on how we can continue to improve. At Avenues we say that well supported people support people well. We are enormously proud of our staff and encourage them to be best that they can be.”
