Meet Dan: Turning miles into meaning for Avenues

Tuesday 14th of April 2026

For Dan Gower-Smith, running isn’t just a hobby — it’s a passion, a community, and now, a powerful way to give back.

Based in Rochester, Kent, Dan works for Avenues and sees first-hand the difference the organisation makes to the lives of the people it supports and their families. Outside of work, running plays a huge part in his life. He’s a member of Rebel Runners Medway and co-directs his local parkrun (Great Lines) alongside his husband — bringing people together through shared goals and community spirit.

Now, Dan is preparing to take on the London Marathon once again — his tenth marathon overall.

A passion for running — and giving back

After entering the London Marathon ballot year after year, Dan was thrilled to finally secure a place for 2026.

“As soon as I got my place, I knew I wanted to raise money for Avenues.”

Having previously run the London Marathon in 2018, Dan knows just how special the event is.

“The buzz of running London and seeing every person taking part achieve their goal is incredible.”

While he’s no stranger to long distances, he knows the challenge is still very real.

“The distance is always tough — and I’m just hoping for cool, dry weather on the day!”

A cause that means everything

For Dan, running for Avenues is deeply personal. Through his work, he sees every day how vital the organisation’s support is — helping people to live fulfilling lives and supporting families along the way.

“I see first-hand the difference Avenues makes.”

His connection to the cause also extends beyond work.

“I have family members who are autistic, and my whole career has been in social care.”

Dan is passionate about ensuring that everyone has the same opportunities, regardless of their support needs.

“It’s so important that the people we support can enjoy their lives, do the things they love and be part of their communities.”

Training with determinationDan our marathon runner

Even with years of running experience, marathon training still brings its challenges.

“It’s tough — but the training is so important.”

Dan stays motivated by running with others and keeping his purpose front of mind.

“Running with people really helps, and knowing I’m running for Avenues keeps me going.”

He’s even surprised himself with his commitment.

“I’ve been getting up early to run before work — even in the rain!”

Running as part of a team

For Dan, being part of Team Avenues is something special – “It’s a privilege.”

The support he’s received from friends, family and colleagues has made a huge difference throughout his journey — whether that’s joining him on training runs, cheering him on, or donating to his fundraising page.

On marathon day, knowing his husband and friends are out on the course will mean everything.

And just as much as his own achievement, Dan is looking forward to seeing others reach their goals too.

“There’s something amazing about seeing everyone taking part, enjoying it and feeling proud.”

When Dan crosses the finish line, one word sums up how he hopes to feel: “Happiness.”

For him, completing the London Marathon is always a huge achievement — but doing it for Avenues makes it even more meaningful.

“To say I’ve run the London Marathon for Avenues means so much more.”

Support Dan and help change lives

Dan is running the London Marathon for Avenues to help ensure that people living with illness, injury and disability have the same opportunities as everyone else — to live full, active and independent lives.

Every donation helps Avenues continue its vital work supporting people and their families.

If you can, please consider donating to Dan’s fundraising page today. You can donate here.

No matter the amount, your support will make a real difference.

As Dan says: “Thank you to everyone who has supported me — whether by running with me, sponsoring me or coming to cheer me on. It means so much.”
