Meet Becky: Running the London Marathon for Avenues
Wednesday 15th of April 2026For Becky Steward, taking on the London Marathon is more than just a physical challenge — it’s a chance to make a real difference for the people she supports every day through her work at Avenues.
Becky, 44, from Bexley in Kent, has worked for Avenues for nine years. When she’s not working, she’s busy with family life and enjoying a range of hobbies, from long walks and exercise to painting and drawing. Recently she’s even dusted off her cello after many years and started relearning the instrument.
Now she’s preparing for an entirely new challenge — running her first ever marathon.

Inspired by the spirit of the London Marathon
Becky’s inspiration came from watching the London Marathon with her children in previous years.
“We’ve watched and supported runners before, and we’re always inspired by the passion and commitment people show,” she says.
This year, Becky will be one of those runners herself, taking on the iconic 26.2-mile course and soaking up the electric atmosphere that the event is famous for.
“I’m most excited about the atmosphere, the crowds, seeing my friends and family cheering me on, the music and all the other inspirational people taking part.”
Of course, Becky knows the challenge will be tough – “From about 13 miles onwards!” She laughs.
Running for a cause close to her heart
For Becky, running the marathon is deeply connected to her work at Avenues.
Having spent nearly a decade supporting people through the organisation, she says she feels proud to play even a small role in helping people live fuller, more independent lives.
“I care deeply about the people Avenues supports. It’s an honour to raise funds that will directly benefit them.”
Her motivation also comes from the chance to combine a personal challenge with representing Avenues in such a prestigious event.
“Being able to contribute further with the hope that it might make a difference is incredibly important to me.”
Becky believes strongly that everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive.
“Supporting people to live active, independent lives in their communities means giving people the chance to flourish and live the lives they want.”
Training with determination
So far Becky’s marathon training is going well — and she’s already reached an important milestone.
“I’ve just reached 13.1 miles — a half marathon distance.”
She admits motivation can sometimes be tested during tough training days, but one thought keeps her moving forward.
“I don’t want to let anyone down who is supporting me or who has donated, or the people the money may help.”
Through rain, cold mornings and long runs, Becky says she’s surprised herself with her determination.
“I’ve been really committed to the training no matter what the weather throws at me.”
Running with purpose
For Becky, every mile represents something bigger.
“It means a great deal to know that every mile I run will help improve the lives of people living with illness, injury and disability.”
She says knowing that donations help challenge disadvantages is both motivating and humbling.
“Every donation, no matter the size, plays a part in helping people access the support and opportunities they deserve.”
A proud Team Avenues runner
Becky says the support she’s received from family, friends, and colleagues has made the journey even more special.
“They’re all on the journey with me to make a difference, and I’ll be carrying that support with me every step of the way.”
Her children have been particularly involved — helping her document her training with clips and videos (and some “interesting” music choices!) to share on social media and encourage donations.
On marathon day, seeing them along the route will be one of the moments she’s looking forward to most.
When Becky finally reaches the finish line, she hopes to feel relief, pride and achievement — and to celebrate alongside thousands of other runners who have taken on the challenge.
Completing the marathon will prove something powerful to herself:
“That I can achieve anything I put my mind to.”
