Matthew’s model success
Monday 16th of June 2025We know that understanding people’s true passions and interests is fundamental to giving them the support they need. For Matthew, finding a support team that would take the time to do this has brought happiness and fulfillment.
Before becoming part of the Avenues community, Matthew had struggled with the support he was getting, which left him anxious, frustrated and distressed.
This had led to placements breaking down, and ultimately Avenues being asked to provide his support. 
Service Manager Sarah explains how her team approached working with him at his home in Reigate: “We spent a long time listening to Matthew so we could build the right support for him; it was really important to understand his wants and shape the team around these things.
“Before Avenues was supporting him, that wasn’t always the approach, which we believed was why things hadn’t worked out.
“We now know him really well, and he has confidence that when he says he doesn’t want to do something, he’ll be listened to. He chooses what he wants to, where he wants to go – he loves planning daytrips and holidays.
“We’ve seen a real improvement in his happiness and quality of life.
Matthew’s key worker, Dawn, describes how much she enjoys supporting Matthew: “He loves life and being with people; he is a true gentleman. He always holds the door open for you and wants to make sure you are ok.
“He’s very clear that he likes to be supported with his different interests and activities by specific members of the team – he likes me to take him shopping!
“We know that Matthew’s real passions are his music and model making. He has DJing ‘residency’ at another Avenues service on Fridays – they love it when he arrives and get very cross if we are stuck in traffic and late.
“He even did a set at my mum’s 80th birthday party which was fantastic.”
“The flat is now decorated with his remarkable models of ships and aircraft which he has a real passion for. He proudly shows to friends and visitors, with his beaming smile.
“Matthew is a joy to support. Things are very different for him now.”
