‘It Takes 2’ tropical party brings people together

Monday 10th of September 2018

Avenues’ Lottery-funded ‘It Takes 2’ (IT2) project recently teamed up with Community Centre and Reach Out organisation Mycenae House to host ‘Tropic Like It’s Hot’, their very own carnival party. People supported by Avenues mixed with young volunteers, older people from Mycenae House’s ‘drop-in cafe’ and members of a Nepalese women’s group.

“It’s wonderful to see so many different ages, abilities and cultures coming together to celebrate the strength of their community, with such vibrancy” said Carly Halpin,  Avenues’ Community Development Worker (pictured above)

The afternoon’s activities included, an armchair exercise session, complete with maracas, by the Michelle Felix Group and a participatory Gospel music session with the London International Gospel Choir. Plus a diverse DJ set, from soca to reggae with DJ Soul Sista “Two of our sessions were led by excellent professionals who experience disability; Michelle Felix and DJ Soul Sista – it was really important to us that the artistic gifts and talents of disabled people were given the platform today” said Carly.

‘It Takes 2′ aims is to support those with a learning disability to connect with others in the wider community around shared interests. Mycenae House’ Community Reach Out Worker Deborah Fitzpatrick (pictured below) echoed Carly’s enthusiasm “As someone working with those who suffer social isolation I was really excited when I came across the ‘It Takes 2’ project. I feel passionate about supporting its vision where ‘Everyone should be an active citizen and engaged in the community where they live”.

According to Carly, connecting people through events such as ‘Tropic Like it’s Hot’ should hopefully lead to shared activities in the future “Friendships were forged here that will continue beyond today’s event – and that is what It Takes 2 is all about!”
