Helping those we support deal with bereavement

Ways to remember mum

Justin and Joe, whom we support at Avenues South East, have faced profound losses over the past year.

Both have navigated the passing of their mothers, and Justin also experienced the loss of his aunt, who had been a significant figure in his life, serving as his next of kin for many years.

With both frequently asking, “Where’s Mum?” support worker Toni utilised her understanding of their situations to develop a plan to help them cope with their grief.

She worked with the wider team to support them both to create a quiet remembrance area in the garden to sit, eat, drink and talk about their missed loved ones.

From start to finish, they were involved in choosing the new furniture and plants for the quiet space. They really enjoyed the project, and Joe regularly sits their to have lunch with his mum.

Service Manager Balinda Wood said: “Everyone experiences grief differently, and this is no different for anyone we support. It’s really important that they are helped to manage their loss in a way that works for them as individuals, as best they can.

“It’s been a hard time for Joe and Justin, but their special garden area seems to be helping them to come to terms with the change in their lives.”
