Grieving family thanks Avenues staff

Tuesday 26th of November 2024

Church Farm Bungalow lost a cherished resident, Norman, on 14th October.

Emma with the framed poem

Norman began his Avenues journey in 1993. He was a huge fan of buses, and so when he moved into Church Farm Bungalow as his health began to decline in 2023, staff transformed his room into an oasis of bus-themed decoration that showcased buses old and new.

Norman also got a bus pass and enjoyed going on trips with staff and family, visiting the transport exhibition and Brooklands Museum.

When Norman sadly passed away, Avenues staff attended the funeral and were overwhelmed that the first piece spoken was a poem dedicated to the support they had given Norman, written by his family.

Service Manager Emma Mcguigan said:

“We were honoured and proud to have a poem written about us all here at Church Farm.

“When we returned to the bungalow, Norman’s brother Chris gave us the poem in a frame, along with the biggest box of chocolates I have ever seen.

“I cannot be any prouder of the team here. They showed empathy, compassion and kindness. They felt an immense sense of pride and fulfilment in supporting this gentleman and his family.

“Witnessing the family’s gratitude and love reinforced the team’s commitment to delivering compassionate end-of-life care, highlighting the importance of dignity, respect, and connection in these final moments.”

The poem read:

It’s only right to mention

That you’re special through and through,

Thought about so warmly

and appreciated too.

You’re helpful and supportive

In a way that warms the heart.

Whatever happens, you are there,

to play a vital part.

Thank you for your kindness,

Which can never be repaid

And for your understanding,

and the difference it’s made.
