Avenues comes together to discuss supporting the Menopause at work

Wednesday 18th of October 2023

Around 75% of Avenues employees are female with more than 50% of those over 45 years old. This is just one of the reasons why discussing the perimenopause and menopause and how to support it at work is vital. Avenues colleagues came together recently for World Menopause Day to talk about how they can support each other.

It’s no secret that the subject of menopause has been in the public agenda recently. A host of celebrities have campaigned for better understanding and breaking the taboo that surrounds the subject. As an organisation with a predominantly female-led workforce it’s impact on Avenues employees, both female and male, is impossible to ignore. It’s one of the reasons Avenues joined thousands of other companies in signing the Menopause Workplace Pledge recently.

Avenues CEO Jo Land welcomes the discussion;  “this is an important topic and something that nearly all women will experience at some point in their lives but which we are reluctant to publicly discuss. We need to break the taboo and support each other to share the experiences.” says Jo.

The Menopause Workplace Pledge means Avenues, among other things, commits to ‘recognising that menopause can be an issue in the workplace and people need to support’ and also ‘talking opening, positively and respectfully about the menopause.’ With this in mind on World Menopause Day colleagues from across the organisation both female and male came together to talk about how they could support each other.

Learning and Development partner Day Wells headed the discussion and stressed the importance for everyone;

“This is a really good opportunity to ‘start the conversation’ about the menopause and how it affects all of us”, says Day.  “I have spent many months chatting to people within Avenues about the menopause and it is clear from these conversations, and from national statistics, that many people are dealing with this alone or are unsure how to broach the subject.

“Menopause awareness is a key area of importance to Avenues, and we understand that this is something that clearly affects a large percentage of our workforce.”

The hope is that managers, particularly in the services of Avenues, will begin to introduce the topic with their colleagues to encourage and facilitate open discussion. Avenues is also looking into a buddying scheme where people can share similar experiences.
