Cecilia Foulger: Living Avenues’ values every day

When it comes to dedication, compassion, and integrity, Cecilia Foulger embodies everything that makes Avenues special.
Recently named Avenues East’s Employee of the Month for September, she was nominated by a family member who wanted to recognise her outstanding commitment and care.
Cecilia has supported the same person for more than five years, building a strong relationship “I think it comes down to trust, consistency, and really taking the time to understand the person. Their routines, preferences, and what matters most to them,” she said. “Over the years, we’ve built a relationship based on mutual respect and genuine care. It’s about celebrating progress together, being there through challenges, and always seeing the person for who they are, not just their needs.”
Integrity is at the heart of everything she does. “To me, integrity means doing the right thing even when no one is watching. It’s about being honest, reliable, and always putting the person we support first,” she said. “Integrity builds trust and ensures that the people we care for feel safe, respected, and valued. It’s the foundation of good support.”
She was first drawn to Avenues because of its strong values and genuine commitment to empowering people to live fulfilling, independent lives. “From the beginning, I could see that it wasn’t just about providing care, it was about empowering individuals and making a real difference,” she shared. “What’s kept me here are the people, both the individuals we support and my amazing colleagues. There’s a real sense of teamwork, respect, and purpose that makes this work so meaningful.” 
For her, the most rewarding part of being a support worker is seeing the progress people make every day. “Whether it’s developing a new skill, gaining confidence, or simply having a good day, knowing that I’ve played a part in that progress makes everything worthwhile.”
Her advice to anyone considering a career at Avenues? “Go for it! If you’re compassionate, patient, and want a career that’s genuinely meaningful, Avenues is a great place to be. You’ll be supported, encouraged to grow, and surrounded by people who truly care about making a difference. It’s not always easy, but it’s always rewarding.”
