Avenues tackles cost of living crisis for disabled people

Wednesday 15th of November 2023

Avenues has added its support to the #SupportCantWait campaign which aims to pressure the UK government to tackle how the cost of living crisis is affecting disabled people. According to research, disabled people face extra costs of around £975 per month because of things like extra heating and specialist equipment.

Avenues have joined 75 other disability charities in sending a letter to the Chancellor of the Exchequer. The letter calls for urgent action to support disabled people through the cost of living crisis, especially as it worsens in Winter. It states that disabled people often feel extra pressures because of things like energy costs and extra transport costs.

The letter draws on research carried out by Scope and Sense*. For example Sense research found that 68 per cent of disabled people are worried they’ll have to skip meals to cope this winter.

The letter asks for:

  1. All benefits to be uprated at least in line with inflation in the Autumn Statement, as is the norm.
  2. A UK Government review of how benefits are set and increased, so people can always afford the essentials, and manage the extra costs that come with disability.
  3. Additional Winter financial support targeted at disabled households with higher energy costs.
  4. Consultation on an energy social tariff under the UK Government’s commitment to develop a new approach to consumer protection in energy markets.
  5. All support to be promoted and communicated in accessible formats, including in BSL and easy read, and compatible with screen reading and magnification software, and to be available at the same time as mainstream formats.
