A very special guest visits Avenues in Margate

One of Avenues services in Margate in Kent had a visit from a very important guest recently. Retired therapy donkey Banks brought smiles and joy to people supported by Avenues in the area.

The sun was shining at Beresford Gardens as they welcomed a truly remarkable visitor: Banks, an 18-year-old donkey, who has his very own Facebook page, is known for spreading joy throughout the Southeast. According to Senior Operations Manager Hayley “It was a wonderful turnout with people we support, some of whom travelled from different services specifically to meet him.”

Banks lived up to his reputation as a gentle soul and wandered happily through both the house and the garden to greet everyone. “Everyone had big smiles and was really keen to take it in turns petting and giving Banks cuddles,” said Hayley.

Donkey-assisted therapy can provide an incredible sensory experience for people with learning disabilities. According to The Donkey Sanctuary they are incredibly intelligent sociable and communicative animals. This leads to a truly enriching experience for those involved.

That was certainly the case at the Avenues service. People enjoyed anafternoon with lovely food complete with carrots for Banks to munch on. According to Hayley he even enjoyed drinking a brew with his guests “They particularly enjoyed feeding him and giving him a cup of tea on the day.” said Hayley.

“He brought so many smiles to everyone’s faces, and we are so grateful for the warmth and gentleness he shared with us all” Hayley added.
