South East

Avenues started life in Kent and so it’s in the South East where much of our experience and expertise originated – working with people who were moving out of long stay hospitals whose behaviour had been considered too challenging for community services. We have a base near East Malling and our range of services includes residential care, supported living and outreach for all age groups.

Our work with the Tizard Centre at the University of Kent to develop our expertise in Positive Behaviour Support and Person Centred Active Support started in our Kent services. It continues today across the organisation, including in Surrey where we are part of the Surrey Positive Behaviour Support Network.

In November 2016, Welmede merged with Avenues. Welmede also has services across Surrey. Visit the Welmede subsidiary page to find out more.

Dan Gower-Smith, Regional Director

What things are you most proud of in your services?

“Our teams don’t really see someone’s disability. You see that in the ways we support people to do more, whether it’s with family or friends or finding a volunteer job. It’s also pleasing when we work with other social care organisations as partners because it means we are doing something different in the best interests of people who need support. We also have a relatively low staff turnover in our support workers which means there is a lot of trust as well as experience.”
