Meet the executive team

Steve James
Group Chief Executive Officer

I have overall responsibility for all the organisation’s activities and plans, ensuring that they deliver our vision and values. This not only involves strategic delivery, but also making sure that it translates to the lives of individuals.

What were you doing before Avenues?

I was a local authority social worker in Lewisham and then moved to a variety of management posts in Southwark social services.

My best day at Avenues so far?

I have loads – normally about small scale but fabulous changes in people’s lives – so I will be greedy and have two. The first is meeting the sister of someone with dementia who had not left her flat for years before we became involved. The second is every annual Avenues barbecue for people we support – Avenues at it’s enjoyable, versatile (and usually sun drenched) best.

Group Deputy Chief Executive

I’m responsible for making sure that we continually improve as an organisation and that we create the right environment to recruit, develop and retain the best employees in social care. I am also a trustee of Key Ring Supported Living Networks, Treasurer of the Charities HR Network (CHRN) and Co-Chair of the HR Network at VODG (Voluntary Organisations Disability Group).

What were you doing before Avenues?

My background in HR has taken me to various commercial and not for profit organisations. Before Avenues I was working for a leading mail order and logistics business.

My best day at Avenues so far?

That was when we achieved an external accreditation for the way in which we manage, develop and treat our employees. What made it special for me was that the whole organisation had been involved in the process and there was a real sense of shared achievement and pride in our success – not as individuals, but as a group of people committed to the same outcome.

Nicola Ford
Group Director of Finance

I am responsible for ensuring the financial control and reporting of the Group's finances and the effectiveness of our IT systems.

What were you doing before Avenues?

I am a qualified Fellow Chartered Accountant and my background in finance comes from a variety of commercial companies, non-departmental public bodies and charities. Immediately before Avenues I was the UK Finance Director at Marie Stopes International.

My best day at Avenues so far?

Even though I haven’t been at Avenues very long yet, it is already difficult to choose but it has to be from one of the many amazing visits to our services. The highlight for me was being able to help one of the people we support with a simple task that brought a huge smile to her face – priceless!

Peter Snelling
Chief Operating Officer

My role focuses on making sure we are providing the best services possible for the people we support. I make sure that we’re continually looking to improve quality and efficiency and to develop and grow what we do.

What were you doing before Avenues?

I have been working in health and social care for the majority of my working life. I have also worked at a senior manager level with local authorities and more recently as a director in the charity sector.

My best day at Avenues so far?

One of my best days recently was when I went to meet the parents of a young person we support. They were in tears as they told me about how the support provided by Avenues has changed their daughter’s life so positively and in turn has removed the stress and pressure from them. They said they now feel they can live a full life again.
