Frequently Asked Questions

What is Social Care?

Social care is about providing care and support to improve the lives of people who need additional support to live their lives.  This can be in their own home or a residential setting.  It is not about providing health care, it is about making sure that people have support in their every day lives, support to work, to prepare food, develop relationships and have fun!

How can I get Social Care?

Social Care is usually accessed through your local social services via a care manager.  The care manager, if you haven't had one already, will carry out what is called a Community Care Assessment and this will identify the things that you or your relatives/friends can or cannot do, the things that they need support with, and how much support they actually need and when they need it.

Who pays for this?

There are lots of ways to pay for this.  The care manager will advise you regarding this and at the moment the usual way is for the payment to come directly from Social Services.  On occasions, if families are able to, they can top and buy additional support.  Other ways of payment are Direct Payments, where you are given your benefits directly, and in the future Individual Budgets will be allocated to users of social care in order that they can directly purchase services rather than go through a care manager.  This way they can gain more control over what their support looks like.
