Positive Behaviour Support

Avenues is committed to a Positive Behaviour Support approach throughout all of its services.  We seek to provide a person centred and values led approach to addressing challenging behaviour, rather than using preventative measures to control someone.

We know that behaviour can be caused by pain, sadness and previous experiences.  We look to ensure that the people we support receive good health care services and that we monitor their health and emotional issues closely.  We also ensure that the person's past history is taken into account when looking into the potential causes of their behaviour.

The goal of Positive Behaviour Support is to help the people we support and their carers or support teams to find ways to manage and redirect their energies in a more positive way.  We base this on understanding how, why and when behaviours happen and what purpose they serve.  Most importantly, it avoids the use of punishment techniques.

Positive Behaviour Support can only work in conjunction with other person centred approaches. We also use Person Centred Active Support as a means of engaging the people we support in activities that may be meaningful to them and Person Centred Planning to explore opportunities to experience new things and make informed choices.  All of these approaches together will support people to gain more control and thereby to really enjoy their lives.
