Community Futures Kent disappointed at Swanley Station decision

6 February 2012

Community Futures Kent has expressed its disappointment at the recent announcement that Swanley Rail Station will no longer be the gateway station for visitors to the Paralympic Games Road Cycling events taking place at Brands Hatch in September 2012.

Simon Goldsmith is Development Manager for Community Futures Kent which is part of the Avenues Trust Group and works with people who have a learning disability. Community Futures Kent has been involved in work to improve access for disabled people at Swanley Station and was planning activities with local people including floral decorations at the station ready for the Paralympics and greeting visitors.

Simon says: “We were told recently that Sevenoaks would now be the gateway station for the Paralympic venue at Brands Hatch. Whilst this is good news for the people of Sevenoaks, this decision has been made very late in the day and we are saddened that people in Swanley will be unable to take forward the various projects they were planning to welcome visitors to the town.  The positive news is that Network Rail have promised that works to make Swanley Station step free and accessible for people with mobility difficulties is to go ahead with a completion date of mid August. We would like to thank the local MP Michael Fallon for all his continuing work to champion Swanley.”
