Michael Fallon, MP for Sevenoaks welcomed a group of local people with learning disabilities from his constituency to the House of Commons on Monday 19th December.

Mr Fallon arranged for his guests from Community Futures Kent to attend a guided tour of the historic building before a private meeting.

Community Futures Kent are part of the Avenues Trust Group who supported people to attend as part of their work to enable people with a learning disability to learn about local and national decision making.  The people who took part in the visit had a particular interest in the future of social care and access to communities.

They asked Mr Fallon about his job as an MP, his duties at the House of Commons and how he could champion small local charities who are struggling during the financial crisis.

Simon Goldsmith, Development Manager for Community Futures Kent went on the visit too: “The visit was very successful and we’re grateful for Michael Fallon who gave up his time to speak to the group during his busy schedule leading up to Christmas. Community Futures Kent will be talking to him in the New Year as the Office of Disability Issues is preparing to consult widely on a new strategy for disabled people.”

Community Futures Kent works to support people with learning disabilities to take a more active part in their community, whether its getting involved in music, politics or accessing local services like leisure centres, libraries, shops and all the places used by everybody else.
