Mayor of Bromley visits new service for people with learning disabilities
7 December 2011The Mayor met Steve James, the Chief Executive of the Avenues Trust Group and met the tenants and support workers.Amplio House in Beckenham is a new purpose built building with six self contained flats and a communal lounge and kitchenette. The scheme is run by Avenues and aims is to provide adults with learning disabilities with more independence and to actively support them to enjoy their local community and look after their flats.Six men have already moved into the flats and everyone has settled in really well. They are all proud of their new homes and are enjoying a more independent lifestyle. Avenues is providing support at Amplio House 24 hours a day. They were pleased to chat to the Mayor and show him their new home.Sharon Forest, Avenues Trust Group Service Manager, has underlined how the new service has changed the lives of its new tenants: “Three of the tenants were previously living in NHS housing after moving out of long stay hospitals. The difference to their lives since moving to Amplio House has been dramatic and they have embraced the change with more enthusiasm and pride than anyone could have expected. One man had not left his home at the NHS site for two years and now regularly walks to the local shops by himself and talks to people in his local community. Before moving in he constantly drew pictures of the long stay hospitals he lived in but the day after moving to Amplio House he drew a picture of the tree outside his new flat and wrote ‘one life, one big flat, Home Sweet Home!’ ”< Back
