The guide aims to educate, engage and encourage the people Avenues supports when it comes to leading a healthy lifestyle and also includes a leisure directory for everyone with a disability living in the Bromley area.
The guide was launched at half-time during Bromley’s big game against local rival Sutton United on Saturday 27 August. The launch also marked the start of new disability football coaching sessions which will start at the football club in September. Martin Chittell is Avenues’ Sport and Active Lifestyles Coordinator. He said: “We are very grateful to the Big Lottery Fund for providing the funding for this exciting project. The guide will help us to educate and encourage people with learning disabilities to make informed decisions about sport, leisure and health. All too often, people with learning disabilities experience barriers to sport and leisure. We hope this project will address that issue and show them all the activities that are out there for them!” Del Parnham Head of Community at Bromley Football Club, added: “As a club with strong community links we are delighted to have been asked to host the launch and are looking forward to an enjoyable day for everyone involved.”
The content has been put together by professionals who support people with a learning disability and translated into easy read by members of Bromley Sparks self-advocacy project, a locally based user-led charity supported by Advocacy For All. This means the document includes large text and pictures making it more accessible for people with learning disabilities. It will also double up as a guide for carers and support staff who can then talk to people with disabilities to help them take part in the activities they want to get involved in. The guide is being distributed to lots of venues regularly accessed by people with a learning disability including clubs, libraries and day services. It will also be sent to people who The London Borough of Bromley and Avenues consider would get the most benefit from it.
